Tonbridge Radio Flyers

Tonbridge Radio Flyers was formed in 1967 by a small group of dedicated aeromodellers, to join together people of similar interests in the Tonbridge area. Since then, due to the nature of the flying sites used, the membership has expanded to cover a large area. But priority is still given to those living within a ten-mile radius of Tonbridge Castle. The full senior membership is restricted in number.

Tonbridge Radio flyers have the use of two flying sites.

The first site, a disused airfield, is used as a powered model and gliders site.

The second site is used as a gliders only site, although members are allowed to fly electric powered models there as well.

Once every month during the winter club meetings are held to discuss any current aspect of club activity, or to have talks and demonstrations relating to aeromodelling.

As the club's name indicates, it does not usually embrace free flight modelling but we do have a few members who participate in this branch of the sport. In particular there is a growing interest in indoor free flight and regular monthly meetings on this subject are held.

We are keen to encourage juniors to take up the hobby and have special junior subscription rates up to the age of 18 years. We are able to offer instruction in both building models and learning to fly them.

There are two types of club membership:

  -Full membership

  -Gliding section membership

Full club membership entitles you to use both flying sites whereas gliding section membership only entitles you to use the gliding site. The clubs policy dictates that all members should belong to the British Model Flying Association (B.M.F.A.), the governing body of the sport within the U.K.
